- Cultural Journeys: Multicultural Literature for Children and Young Adults Pamela S. Gates and Dianne L. Hall Mark
(The Scarecrow Press, 2006, 257 pp. $49.00. ISBN: 978-0-8108-5079-8) Teaching about cultures and tolerance have never been more important, particularly in the face of more and more immigration to this country. Our authors provide essays on building collections that reflect diversity followed by sample units of instruction that emphasize the use of the diverse collection in understanding various cultures. Topics cover picture books, follore, historical fiction, nonfiction, realistic fiction, and poetry. Certainly, every teacher librarian needs to keep cultural recognition and activities on the front burner – reminding ourselves constantly to reach out to everyone. It is not something we can let go until a school disturbance makes us try to solve prejudice and misunderstanding after the fact. David Loertscher, Jan 1, 2007
- 13 Colonies! 13 Years! Integrating Content Standards and the Arts to Teach the American Revolution. Mary Wheeler and Jill Terlap. Libraries Unlimited, 2006. What do you think: The best way to teach and learn social studies is to shovel a lot of direct teaching at the kids, Read the chapter, drill the vocabulary words, take the test, and do this over and over. BORING! Sure-fire methods to keep scores low. This book asks teachers and librarians to insert a little fun into the teaching of the American colonies – just enough to keep the interest up, but not enough to smack of wasting time. It’s called the spice of learning. Here is a book that could easily be overused with its songs, plays, crossword puzzles and other activities, but a few well-chosen activities integrated at just the right time will keep things moving and interest high. Recommended with the caution mentioned. David Loertscher, Oct. 2006
