  • CATALOG IT! A GUIDE TO CATALOGING SCHOOL LIBRARY MATERIALS, 2ND ED.

Allison G. Kaplan and Ann Marlow Riedling

The amount of cataloging in the school library has decreased over the years and become easier in the era of automated systems. The authors provide a basic introduction that might be used as a text for school library cataloging classes. It covers description, classification, and subject heading, among other topics, and it helps to introduce the MARC record. Paired with another favorite, Cataloging Correctly for Kids: An Introduction to the Tools (Itner, Fountain, & Gilchrist, 2005), these two manuals can be used to brush up on the latest cataloging rules, or it can serve as a personalized short course by those who are no longer required to take a cataloging course as a part of a credential. (Linworth Books, 2006. 224 pp. $44.95. 1-58683-197-6.)

Bottom line: Recommended for the novice. david Loertscher

  • Cataloging Cultural Objects: A guide to Describing Cultural Works and Their Images. Murtha Baca, Patricia Harpring, Elisa Lanzi, Linda McRae and Ann Whiteside. American Library Association, 2006. You have a unique collection of cultural obujest such as vases, necklaces, art pieces, rugs, costumes, relics, etc. that are unique and need to be shared with the world. How to you catalog such a collection? This book provides the guidance you need so that your records can be searchable far beyond your library. Recommended for those with these special collections.
  • An Automation Primer for School Library Media Centers and Small Libraries. Barbara Schultz-Jones. Linworth Books, 2006. School districts need someone with interest in the digital school library and online catalogs to keep abreast of the major changes in library automation systems. Sales representatives will be anxious to help, but you need to develop a broader perspective so that you can select on the basis of functionality and the many other issues rather than upon friendships. This book provides a current picture of all the options and is worth the time of the person designated to care about this functioning.  Recommended. David Loertscher, Oct. 2006
